Lodging

You have the option of staying at one of the lakeside learning center houses on Wonder Lake, the largest private lake in Illinois, or utilizing a local motel near Wonder Lake.  Please read below to learn more:

Wonder Lake Learning Center

Enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets, comfortable single or bunk beds in dorm-style rooms, family-style meals with your instructors, and outrageously decadent desserts!

We have room for 8 persons in two bedrooms inside the seminar house.  There are two full bathrooms open to all.  There is also a spacious room for 6 more immediately adjacent to the house.  When we have a "full house", we rotate bedroom assignments each course session.

Those staying at the lake have full access to our medical library of texts, instructional videos, tapes, and CDs during the course (these may not leave the premises). We also have a meditation and massage room which you may reserve for a massage or for solitary meditation time.

Meals include self-serve complete breakfast (we’ll have fruit smoothies and coffee prepared), prepared buffet-style hot and cold lunch options including soup and salad, and hearty family-style dinners.  You may bring wine to compliment ours.  And if you are an awesome cook, by all means bring a favorite recipe to share!  In past years, we've had fresh new York City bagels; one attendee prepared creme brulee and deep-fried turkey; another shared chocolate martinis; another two made us all a "chocolate volcano" dessert; one Alaskan attendee brought us fresh salmon she had caught; we had a chocolate dipping fountain brought from Canada for a most momentous dessert; and one attendee even brought fresh lobster for an outstanding dinner!

If you expect to make long-distance calls during your stay, please plan to bring a cell phone or a telephone calling card; the telephone at the lake is set for local and 1-800 calls only.  Please note that there is NO on-line access or on-line availability at the lake; if this is necessary to you, you will need to stay at an area motel that provides this service.

Staying at the seminar house requires you to be a considerate houseguest.  Because you will be sharing a room with other veterinarians, you will need to plan to arrive at the house BEFORE 11PM the first evening before each session.  And since we are located in a lakeside residential area where voices carry over the water, the hours of 10PM to 7AM are designated as "quiet time".  Because our facilities are designed for an optimum learning experience for all attendees, we cannot accommodate children or pets at the lake.

SHOULD YOU STAY AT THE LAKE???

TEN WAYS TO TELL IF..... you are a good candidate for room and board:
1. You enjoy home-cooked meals and great mealtime conversation - about veterinary medicine.
2. You are comfortable sharing a room with 2-5 same-sex veterinarians.
3. You enjoy coming to breakfast in your jammies.
4. You are comfortable with, and considerate about the use of, shared "down the hall" bathroom facilities.

5. You know how to use ear plugs if your roommate snores - and you do so, without complaining.
6. You know how to clean up after yourself -- and you do!
7. You love S’mores, campfires, and outrageous desserts.
8. You enjoy watching gorgeous sunsets while you dip your toes in the lake.
9. You have few food allergies/dietary intolerances.
10. You welcome time away from ringing telephones, blaring televisions, and computers.

TEN WAYS TO TELL IF...you’d really be happier in a hotel room:
1. You know that you need a lot of quiet time by yourself.
2. You cannot live without daily doses of e-mail, loud music, TV, long showers, or music to sleep by.
3. Your snoring is sufficient to raise the dead - or you cannot tolerate anyone else snoring.
4. You require a very restricted diet, such as a pure vegan or gluten-free diet, or you have many food allergies.
5. You’re away from home, and darn it, you want a maid to pick up after you!
6. You do not enjoy "talking shop" with other veterinarians.

7. You would sooner DIE than be seen with "bed-head".
8. Your have health issues that require an immediately accessible and private in-room bathroom.
9. You plan to bring your pets, children, or a significant other to the seminar.
10. You are on a serious diet, and the temptation of great food and outrageous desserts is too much for you.
